He really knows how to play up the drama in the 1000s anglo saxon england. It is straight up Young the Restless but people are smellier.

Ken Follett’s writing transports and I wasn’t let down by TEATM after having a great experience with TPOTE. I definitely plan to read the rest of the books in this series.
These are definitely books you need to be in a mood for. They are definitely “sit here and read this book for hours or you will never get through it” type stories.
Loved the characters, the setting, and the unexpected LGBTQ rep!

If you liked the other books in the Kingsbridge series, you'll like this one. It's more of the same sort of story and characters, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.
The Evening and the Morning is full of violence and gore, sex, love, family, and all the soap opera drama you get from a Kingsbridge novel. I like that his books are full of violence and realism and can get quite bleak at times but the main characters always get a happy ending. The book is readable and exciting with some unexpected elements.
One thing that bugged me was how he would give us a person's name and then give a shortened name straight after...like "his name was ........., known as ....." It felt like he didn't want the reader to worry about the consonant-filled anglo-saxon names so he gave us something easier to read instead. Obviously almost nothing is known about the ordinary people during this period so they may well have all shortened their names, but it just felt a little clunky to encounter it so often in the book.
Overall though, I really liked this book. It's easy to read, exciting, scandalous, and an interesting presentation of life during this time.

The dark ages... So little is known about this time period. We know more about the Roman Empire hundreds of years before than we know about the dark ages. Writing a 900+ pages historical fiction novel about it deserves a couple stars already.

This is Ken Follett's prequal to The Pillars of the Earth covering the 997-1007 CE time period. England is under attack from the East by the Vikings and from the West by the Welch. But the real battle is within England itself. The King, the religious, the noblemen, everyone is fighting for more power.

Plenty of blood, sex, lies, crimes, deaths, and love scattered throughout the book. It didn't feel too long. It was captivating from the beginning.

Looking forward to reading Ken Follett's latest which just came out.
