I remember really really enjoying The Pillars of the Earth, the first book in this series, many years ago so I am going to guess that first installment is still great (Oprah picked it for her book club-so hopefully!), but this one, not so much.

I also remember the sequel/s to the book to be not as good as the first either, so I guess the prequel falls into that category. Overall, the characters and writing, and to some extent the world, despite being a pretty long book, feels simplified and very obvious/straightforward. It feels like either everything is completely terrible and goes wrong but also everything works out? Mostly read to complete the series.

Such a captivating adventure I could not put it down. Over 900 pages of white knuckled adventure in the Dark Ages told in a way that kept me turning the pages for more. At its most basic level it is classic good versus evil, yet so much more is given to the story by the beautifully rendered 10th and 11th century English setting and historically accurate hierarchy and way of life, based on what we know. Highly recommended.
