I thought this book was just ok. Full disclosure: I have not read Pillars of the Earth. Perhaps if I had done so, it would have colored my opinion of the book differently. That being said, I was underwhelmed by the storyline; found the romances to be rather inauthentic (and frankly, downright cheesy); and can't possibly understand why this needed to be 1000 pages. Ragna's storyline (and perhaps, parts of Edgar's) was the only redeeming part of the book, but even that lacked depth despite the number of pages in the book.

overall a pleasant read - much of the same as the other books in the series. i love the historical detail in this book, though the plot is less exciting because it’s nearly identical to the other books. still, i was attached to the characters and compelled by the drama and how different social norms affect the characters’ interactions.
