i was honestly a bit disappointed. i loved the first book so much, but this was a bit of a letdown. i really dont like how the female mc was written and the pacing in this book was so wierd.
overall it felt very different from the first book, and i hope the next book in the series is better again...

Metro 2034 follows Hunter and Homer through the metro to stop the spread of a threat from spreading from one station across the entire metro. On their journey they meet Sasha, an 18 year old girl who is in love with Hunter for literally no reason.
Metro 2033 has horror and fantasy elements to the story, but in Metro 2034 Glukhovsky abandons the horror and fantasy aspects of the Metro and in doing so eradicates all mystery from the world he built in the first book.
His treatment of Sasha as the only female character in the story so far is also extremely lacking. She has a compelling backstory which sets her up to be an interesting character but is reduced to being a tool to assist Homer with explaining the philosophy of the book through their analysis of Hunters actions, and once Sasha has finished spelling out the lesson Glukhovsky is telling us in this story, she serves no more purposeand is simply killed off .
My biggest gripe with this book is the world feels extremely dull from the perspective of the characters we follow until near the end of the book when a character called Leonid is introduced and Sasha's story temporarily diverges from Homer and Hunter. Leonid brings life back into the world by not just sharing lore of the metro but also interacting with it. The chemistry between Leonid and Sahsa was also a lot more dynamic and enjoyable to read than the main plot.
The end of the book left me feeling empty and sad, and not being of the sad way the book ended, but because I wished I had been reading Sasha and Leonids story the while time. Glukhovskys decision to kill the two most interesting characters off was an even bigger stab to the heart .

Much deeper meaning that I definitely missed, which lowered the reading experience.
Still not good (and just don't let me start on the sexism; or the plot holes; or rehashing pseudo-philosophical thoughts that were said too often and mostly much better) but definitely better than the first part of the series. A lot of more atmospheric and without the distinct feeling of reading a role-playing game with the GM throwing in more and more obstacles so that the story does not end too early, which the first book had. The fact that this is not one of the simple-boys-has-to-become-a-hero books and a good feeling for the setting definitely helps. More of one and a half stars book, but given how the first one got just one star, I did not have the heart to give this one only one, too.
