It has done the best thing that nonfiction like this can do: it has made me more curious about the subject matter.

I will miss having these alternative visions enter my end on almost every new page.

Whew. This is the first book my book club actively gave up on trying to finish. It was an ambitious stab in the dark at an interesting subject to discuss but it turned into a more academic and meticulous retelling of human history through the lens of an anthropologist than we had anticipated. I'm not one to fully give up on books, my list of DNFs is negligible to non-existent. I normally come back at some point and trudge through to the end and trudge I did here. I had to get the audiobook to get through the last half in any reasonable time.

Now to go into our general issue with the book or at least mine... a complete lack of editing or want to make this readable to the general public. The book goes through an exhaustive list of examples of cultures, societies, and theories in every chapter to provide backing for their thesis. These examples get so overwhelming it feels like he never properly loops the info provided back to that thesis or how it connects to modern society. To provide a shitty metaphor I just made up on the spot, it feels like loading 50-tons of goods on top of a sickly donkey and expecting it to be able to carry it. I know the purpose and appeal of the book, it just was not what I was looking for. It feels like Guns, Germs, and Steel without a clear overall picture.
