This book is a stunning invitation to look at the heart of broken systems and broken hearts. By the end I was weeping for the pain, the healing, and the continued fight for a better life.

A fun read at times, with an interesting world and high-intensity moments of battle, but poorly built characters and shallow-feeling romance (inan basically cheat codes into falling into love using his magic mind powers). The book wasn't picking up for me until the shipfight arena scene, and from there the only interesting moments were the plot driving scenes where the orishan soldiers and zelie/the maji would interact. The relationships between the main cast of characters weren't particularly compelling to me (besides zelie, tzain and their family), and the romances felt largely unecessary (tzain and amari) or just poorly done (inan and zelie). I found the romance between inan and zelie very juvenile and rushed, if anything taking away from the depth of their characters and making inan's eventual betrayal incredibly convoluted (pick a side bro you can't be banging an enemy of the crown while also begging for your daddy's approval, how are you going to save her from torture and then capture her dad for ransom??).

I'm not a super big reader of YA fantasy but I love the six of crows duology, and on top of having an interesting universe, the characters are incredibly compelling and I find myself rooting for them as the plot unfolds in surprising ways. I found many parts of this book predictable and the unpredictable bits confusing and unimportant to the character building or plot. As a result, I lowkey didn't gaf about anyone except zelie, and even she sometimes fell flat for me given the chosen-one-main-character way she was written. HOWEVER shout out to the author for writing really cool fight scenes and creating an interesting backdrop for the story using african mythology. I loved the scenes with zelie and her family, and I thought it was fitting how her magic allowed her to see her mother at the end of the book. Overall entertaining and just sometimes tropey and flat.

Tomi Adyemi did a great job at world-building that's filled with so much beauty and power. I really enjoyed that it's based on Nigeria. Hearing the accents in the audiobook was so worth it as it really helped me immerse myself in the story. Zélie is such a strong character who carries the loss and trauma of her family and her village until the end of the book. I really did enjoy her character. I just wanted a little bit more from the other characters, outside of  Zélie, as they could've been developed a little more. The story was really good, but I felt a little bit lost at times during the story. I kind of wish that some plot points could've been fleshed out a tiny bit more and ties in with the rest of the story. Overall, this is still a pretty good book though. It was really entertaining and I was pretty invested in  Zélie and her journey all throughout the book despite getting lost a few times.
