Reread via some eyes but mostly audio. I liked it a bit better this time so raising my rating to 3 stars. Loved the discussion on the instruments and I didn't hate Fancy Day like I did last time. Dick wasn't such a favorite this time and I noticed some things I didn't like about him that I missed last time.

Having read just one Hardy in my whole life and that was 50 years ago for my English O level, I decided I should give him a try. I chose this one simply because there were only two Hardys in the library and the other was my O level book.
But what a delight! I never expected it to be so funny and it has a real charm. The characterisations are fabulous and the story though very simple is very sweet.

Surprisingly light and funny, especially considering how heavy his later novels would be. Or at least that's their reputation.
A fun, bright, breezy novel about rural England in the early 19th century.
