Surprise Surprise, was prepared for another one of Hardy's tear jerkers and this has to be the first one of his books I've read that I felt had a really happy ending. I really enjoy this authors story tears or not and do recommend his works as he is a wonderful storyteller. I did rate this work 5 * but it just won't let me rate it.

A Thomas Hardy romance novel?
I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop for Fancy and Dewey.
While it was a light read, it was not for me.

i love hardy.. and this is an early work so i will not judge too harshly. but it was really difficult to get into this book (took 3 tries over the past year). it is a short book, so not too much happens and the characters aren't very developed... plus it lacks that "no he didn't" factor that my more favourite hardy novels have. oh well!

I liked this book, it's a great snippet of Hardy's Wessex writing, and nice that it's a bit less tragic than the others! I enjoyed looking at the map in this edition and finding out more about the setting. I loved the introduction we get to the choir characters through their conversation in the house at the beginning, the speech and description really immerses you in the scene.

An uncharacteristically happy ending for Hardy. Or is it? Fancy disappoints compared to so many of Hardy's all-too-human women, but she comes off almost as one of such in training.

Such a lovely love story that takes place in a small English village. I very much like Thomas Hardy, and this was a short and sweet book.
