As someone who has only watched the series I quite enjoyed this book. There are definetely things that have aged poorly and I have a huge problem with the book that practically takes all possibility of it being anything higher than a 3.5 away from the book, but given what I had heard about the books and how little I enjoy romance books, this book could have gone so much worse.

Now let's talk spoilers. Simon's and Daphne's relationship is very different from the one in the series. They are never "enemies" in the book and Simon is a lot nicer and sweeter than he is in the tv show. I must say the relationship in the books is a lot better than in the movie. Now, the sexual assault. I truly don't understand why Quinn decided to make Daphne sexually assault Simon in a book where she is suppossed to be a character we root for. I truly feel bad for the man. And the fact that he ended up forgiving her. I could never. Although I knew it was going to happen I was really enjoying the book until that point. It just leaves a bad taste on my mouth. They are still cute. Can't wait to read the next book.

I'm gradually adding books I've read in 2021 to give a true reflection of the books I've read since keeping records. This was the first book I read in 2021, and is what kick started my reading journey having put reading on the back burner whilst bringing up the children, previously being an avid reader. This is the first in the Bridgerton story of Daphne and Simon. Set in the 1800's the pair hatch a plan, to pretend to be on the verge of a proposal, Simon so that the mothers and daughters of the Ton back off, and Daphne to have more admirers and to aim for a real proposal. The ruse works but then they fall for each other. It is a slushy historical chick lit, enjoyable never the less. Once they get. married the book becomes an issue for me, with Daphne desperate for a child forces herself on Simon. Not acceptable from either sex. A big fat no for me, but it was picked for a book club and more are likely to be read. A pleasant enough passing of time inspite of the section outlined above.

This is my second read for this book and it's still hardly three stars. I forgot how witty and sarcastic the characters were in this (especially Daphne) and enjoyed their personalities a lot more in the books. Also despise that the relationship between Daphne and Colin isn’t as great on screen as it is in the book. I feel like they gave Eloise and Benedict what was supposed to be Colin and Daph, but I digress!

The romance was…

I actually have no clue what to say about it, just that they were better as friends for me and something gross happened that threw me off entirely. I just couldn’t root for them anymore. Anyway, I came back to refresh my memory and remembered why this wasn’t on my list of favorites in the series.
