Quite possibly the hardest non-fiction book I've ever read. It took me AN EMBARASSINGLY LONG TIME TO READ - I STARTED THIS IN JANUARY!!!
I'm a history buff, and anything history-based I will devour it, but this was incredibly hard. It jumped around a lot from topics, and yes although it had coherent arguments about Byzantine history, I don't think that I really absorbed much from it. I barely remember anything about it - not just because it took me a millennia to finish - but because there was no breaks between topics during the chapters so I got incredibly distracted.
