Gorgeous and grotesque. There's a lot going on in this comic but this set feels a bit like filler, like we're between the major bits. The illustrations are sometimes muddy and hard to put together, but there's such a wealth of detail and beauty in them that the problems are more than made up for.
Equally if not more gorgeous and intricate than the last two volumes of the Montress series, this volume presents a new location and some new characters for the protagonist and friends to discover. Speaking frankly, the one-dimensional bullish rage of the protagonist begins to wear thin, at least for me, and I was grateful that there were token efforts to expand on the secondary characters such as Kippa the fox-girl here. Ultimately, there is a conflict with unclear stakes and the requisite hauling into view of shady figures and hidden mysteries. However, the storytelling is beginning to show its limits as it tries to match grand aspirations, and side-plots regarding characters in other spaces feel less than relevant.
What's good and powerful, however, is the monumental sense of world that has been accumulated, and the strikingly powerful set of primary characters. Their actions may not make much sense, as is all too frequent, but the comic as a whole remains very readable and engaging.

What can I say about this series that hasn’t already been said? The characters are incredible, the world building and lore is a masterpiece, and the violence and action is brutal and really gives you perspective on how horrible things are in this fantasy world. The most stunning aspect to this series besides the writing which is incredible is the art...it is hauntingly gorgeous and makes me want to stare at it for hours. My only complaint is that I have to wait so long to continue the story. This series is one of my best reads of the year by far.
