Absolutely marvelous. Can't get enough of this intense plot, matriarchal government and strong female characters, and god killing.

I criticized the last volume's art for requiring an inordinate amount of puzzling over, but goddamn if the story doesn't get that criticism in this one. After reading chapter 13 (the first in this volume) I took a 4 week break because we continued to be dropped into conversations between characters we've never seen before discussing things we have no understanding of. This style of worldbuilding was established in the first two volumes, but I was frustrated that the entire series seemed to be made up of an ever-expanding world that didn't reward a reader for any attention invested in the previously established characters/locales.
Then I read the rest of the volume and loved it just as much as the first two. The information introduced in subsequent chapters all had clear ties to preexisting lore, and upon re-examining chapter 13 with that new info in hand, I could see the links that weren't clear before. This series expects quite a bit from an engaged reader, but remains interesting and supremely stylish.

Monstress is really a good title for this graphic novel series. Maik is just that and she is a hard character to like. And I don’t actually like her but I do find her very compelling. Maik is angry, rightfully so, and she’s physically linked to an old god that doesn’t have her best interests in mind and most of the known world is out to kill her. What bothers me about her is how she treats those who are kind to her: the same way she treats everyone else, in other words badly. Her trust issues are overwhelming and I’m not sure why anyone is helping her at all. That makes their motives interesting to me.
The story is to the point of making it difficult to review without spoiling everything. The art remains lush and gorgeous. The details and emotions it contains is stunning. The story contains a lot of betrayals and new alliances. Maik’s team has unintentionally become the root of city that might have been friendly to them losing its protective shield. They must get it restored and to do that they have to go into an old temple with older protectors and another old goddess the thing inside Maik wishes to see.
Both the little fox girl and the cat have a lot more of independent roles this time out and both showed have long lasting repercussions. I’m looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.

Most of the time I have no idea what is going on but it sure is beautiful.
