I love this, but I lost motivation to continue.
Gorgeous art. Great pacing; nothing is over-explained.
Sometimes you get through a whole trade paperback volume of a comic, and it's like, "did anything even happen?" That is not a problem Monstress has.
This series continues to be gripping and inventive in myriad delightful and horrifying ways. There were some parts of this volume that got so frenetic that the art and dialogue couldn't quite keep up. This was an exciting, purposeful choice, but it did make some pages a little hard to discern, and it was a little visually jarring since the art is otherwise so beautifully detailed. Super solid book overall.

Beautiful as always. Monstress Vol. 3 plays with the idea on security. Safety can be physical items like locks and chains and guards, but there is also safety in consistency and patterns. For Maika Halfwolf, the constants in her life are threatened; her love, her conscious, her past, her agency, her demonic god friend. She finds that the old reliable tricks are no longer working and she must push herself out of her comfort zone to accommodate that need. (Friendship, trust, compassion)

It just overwhelms you with frenzied visuals to gloss over the lack of a coherent plot. Each time a critical question is asked, the characters are interrupted with a crazy battle sequence that is so off the wall bonkers that none of it is even comprehensible. If we aren't being blitzed by visceral graphics, we're being served up the same infantile edgy dialogue that is too cringeworthy to take serious.
Each chapter of every book is set up for another chance for the lead character to say "Fuck" and then slaughter something evil. This series is wholly unsatisfying.
