I’m really into the story and illustration style, but I’ve run into some issues with this volume. The lore is really dense, and there are so many characters and locations that I’m beginning to get them confused, especially since I didn’t move directly onto this issue after finishing #2. Also, the colours can be quite dark and the action frenetic, so it can be difficult to grasp what’s actually happening. So essentially I’m still enjoying myself, but I’m becoming increasingly confused. I wish there was a glossary of characters to refer to at the front of the book.

The art of this serie is beautiful.
The world building is increasingly complex and the politics difficult to follow.
It would be nice to reread the entire serie once it is finished. A lot is not explained or cryptic, which make the wait for the next volume even longer.

It would be a lie to say that the Poets are impartial witnesses to history, though they strive to be exact and sincere, unbiased by resentment and faithful to the truth.
Poets, for all their training and blessings from Ubasi, are still, after all, cats. And cats have been known to tell pleasant lies about ourselves, particularly to outsiders.
It is safe to say this is my new obsession. Monstress is set in an alternate, matriarcal, world, in the aftermath of a war between humans and the Arcanics, a half-breed of Immortal Ancients and Humans. On the human side are the Cumaea, an order of sorceresses who consume Arcanics to fuel their power.
Maika Halfwolf is one such Arcanic; having survived the journey to the mysterious Isle of Bones, she continues to be pursued by the human Federation, the Cumaea, and the Arcanic Courts of Dawn and Dusk. What secrets can she uncover in the refugee city of Pontus?
A fast-paced, steampunk-esk, fantasy which is still being expanded. Onto volume four!
