Man, it ISN’T just me having a hard time following the plot of this series and everything else going on. Judging from reading other reviews in hopes that I’m not just bad at reading, other people are also struggling to keep things straight.
As with the other books, the artwork is just out of this world gorgeous, and is the main reason I’m continuing to read. I think comic book format makes it extra hard to keep track of this story because proper nouns and world-specific improper nouns are less frequent, and things that would normally have to be spelled out are just illustrated but sometimes still hard to interpret.
Also, while I like the little excerpts where the cats tell lore and info to the reader, it’s hard to tell if the info they are giving is relevant to the story or if it is just extra world building for the fun of it. Which is sort of annoying because this story is already full enough of characters and races and history and conflicts that are hard to remember.
There is an Inquisitrix lady that I don’t think is even actually named in this book, but she is important in this volume and I was losing my mind trying to remember if her name was mentioned at some point and I just didn’t catch it. You have no idea what is actually going on with Tuya or who she is or what she wants, and half the time I have no idea of the scenes with her and Maika are just dreams or real memories or visions or something. And Maika remains unlikable to me haha, she has no real personality except “cold” and “bitchy”, and she has that main character syndrome where she can survive any wound with basically no problem, no matter how serious or bad it is.
I don’t know, I’m still liking the series, but I’ve stopping paying too much attention to the actual plot because I keep getting lost and confused as to who is who, what happened when, etc. I’m just enjoying the artwork and appreciating Kippa as she should be appreciated.
