This book. 😖 I can’t even adequately express how much I disliked this. I haven’t rolled my eyes so much in a very long time. Annoyed by insta-love? Be prepared to hate this book!
The premise of this book sounded so interesting. Greek mythology and fantasy? YES PLEASE. I don't think that biased my expectations that much but wow, was I disappointed in this book. As a general rule, I despise insta-love (looking at you A Discovery of Witches) but this took it to a whole new level. Within one to two days of meeting who is willing to die for a sexual partner? Additionally, after a first hook up, who is head over heels in love with someone? COME ON.
I also found the dialog between Maddox and Ashlyn to be absolutely annoying. Do these two ever speak in a complete sentence to each other? Why waste your time with a sentence when you are spending time with your one true love I guess. This absolutely drove me insane and made me laugh every time they had a scene together.
Instead of focusing on this insta-love, this book would have been better served with more development of the warriors. I was interested in learning more about their characters and backgrounds, but instead I had to suffer through cringe-worthy scenes between Maddox and Ashlyn.
I clearly did not get the appeal of this book, based on it's Goodreads rating. I'm just thankful I borrowed it from my local library instead of spending money on it.

The book was really slow, the only thing that kept going was the reviews. I must say that i really like J.R ward more, somehow for me she keeps it flowing naturally.

1. I wasn't exactly sure if I was meant to find certain bits so funny. Obviously bits were made to be funny like the guys thinking pills were 'pebbles' and some of the other random crap they thought, showing just how isolated they were, but then during the 'heated' moments, some of the stuff Maddox and Ashlyn says is just hilarious in a very cringey and cheesy way!
2. WHY SO DRAMATIC? I know you're in a house full of demons that could kill you within a second but like, must you have a giant break down every damn second?! This was especially true in the scene where Dannika (sp?) was getting brought into town and it was like a 5minute scene of her screaming... Shut up. This wouldn't of annoyed me if every moment of their interaction would of been like this but it wasn't. At other times they were completely calm and accepting of the situation.
3. While the first chapter was a slight 'info dump' it actually worked out in the end. For this being the first book in a series, we were fed information about their world in a way I could actually stand and in a way that actually made sense which was a welcome change to the general 'first book info dump'.
4. The pace of the main relationship was excellent. More and more in PNR's I find myself getting annoyed at how fast they seem to go with the main relationship but for this book it was near enough perfect. Even though it did happen quite quickly time-wise, in the book itfelt like much longer and it was totally believable.
5. I also like the pace of the friendships in the book. The acceptance of Ashlyn by the Lords was truly believable.
6. I really didn't like Anya. I mean, I knew there was going to have to be some sort of way to end it and it was cutting it close to really bring in a whole load of explanation and 'way out clause' but Anya felt rushed. Hopefully we'll get to know her!
Overall this is a really great book, but I thought it definitely had its flaws, especially in terms of writing.

I'm giving this a 3 within the context of all books, but I'd bump it up to a 4 if I were just comparing to other romances. The story line is creative and the writing is visual and entertaining, even if my inner editor tsk'ed a time or two. The love scenes were pretty tingly, too. I definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and downloaded the second book!

This was the first book by Gena Showalter I have read and I must admit I immensely enjoyed her writing style. I loved her ability to give the characters depth and history while weaving that information into the story. I never felt overwhelmed or bored with the the information and I felt that it was written with perfect balance. And I really got into the unique plot. My only catch was the insta-love-connection-desperation between Ashlyn and Maddox. I loved the suspense and the excitement the rest of the book gave me but I needed a little more from them. Don't get me wrong, I loved it and I am reading more about them and this messed up little mix of demon/angel/men, but I needed a bit more relationship development. Overall I was completely enthralled with the entire reading experience and couldn't pull myself away.
