Review – Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson
Rating: ★★★★☆

Though just a short story, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell is incredibly gripping. Sanderson delivers tight, suspenseful action and masterful worldbuilding in a compact package. What truly stands out is the protagonist, Silence Montane — a strong woman not because she’s a sword-swinging superhero, but because of her intelligence, resilience, and emotional depth. Sanderson resists clichés and instead offers a character who feels real and compelling, navigating a hauntingly dangerous world with grit and heart. A chilling, well-paced read that lingers long after the last page.

Such a cool premise for this story, loved the characters and the different side Sanderson shows here. This story is a bit more raw and crass than his usual work, and I loved it.

This hooked me with its vibe. A haunted woods where lighting a fire or *spilling blood* summons unkillable shades? Genius. And Silence, the no-nonsense innkeeper? Loved her. She’s the kind of morally-gray survivor I’d want on my team during the apocalypse.

But here’s where I side-eye: This story left me craving *more*. The novella’s length means we sprint through the horror and lore without ever really sinking into it. The worldbuilding (a ghost economy?! The Forests’ history?!) is *so cool*, but it’s sketched, not painted. Silence’s relationship with her daughter? Felt like bullet points, not bonds. And that ending? Abrupt doesn’t even cover it—it’s like Sanderson realized he hit the word count and yeeted us out.
