Zadie remembers when her mother left five years ago. Her younger sister Finn was put in a foster home and they both miss their mother, and don’t understand what happened when/why she left. They both have special magical skills, like she did. Zadie tries to reconnect with her sister and finds her at their old home. They begin a journey to find their mother.
At the end, I also felt like this journey described the struggles of mental illness. I wondered if it was magic or just mental illness affecting especially their mother.
Kind of like The People We Keep (the journey) with Other Birds (the magical realism)
A journey of two sisters to find their mother.
“… she had one steadfast rule: never use her ability for anything of consequence. She preferred it that way. The last thing she wanted was to be that person in a disaster movie whom everyone thinks is crazy for predicting the apocalypse. Then when it turns out she was right all along, everyone looks to her to fix it.” Ch 1
“… the story of her migration. Two thousand, two hundred and eighty miles. That’s how far Nora had traveled. It sounded far, but it was nothing compared to the 44,000 miles Arctic terns fly from Iceland to the Antarctic and back again.” Track 29
