I really enjoyed the magical/mystical aspects of the story line and found it to be a lovely read overall. That said, I have some feelings about the way the book discusses/treats familial bonds, especially the way it seems to prioritize genetic relationships over those of the people who are around.

3.5 ⭐️s. Tbh, I didn't expect much out of this one. I ended up having a good time with it though! Explores family dynamics in a speculative way that doesn't feel too hokey.

This is a beautiful story following two sisters Finn and Zadie, on a journey of finding their mother. The Non-linear writing shows the power of memories, strength of familial ties, and the trials that come with it. The magic woven into this tale is fascinating and its something I haven’t encountered before. I love Ruth Emmie Lang’s writing and look forward to reading more from her in the future. What more could I ask for in a story 💜

I received an arc, ahead of release, through Netgalley. All thoughts are my own.

Content Warnings: Pregnancy, abandonment, dementia, blood, and injury.

This was an interesting story about how the trauma of their mother's disappearance affected two sisters differently. We get to journey with them as they try to find their mother while also finding themselves at the same time.

I really enjoyed reading about these two sisters, who seem only to share the fact that their mother is missing, slowly find their bond, and as they journey to find their mom learn more about themselves as well.

The ending of this book, though happy, left me with more questions and a little disappointed. I really wish the book had been slightly longer so we could have explored the ending a bit more.

I finished this book about a month ago, and the more time that has passed since I read it the more I like it! I struggled to connect with the characters while reading, and since the characters and their journey was very important to this book, I wasn't able to fully immerse myself in the story while I read. However, it's undeniably well-written and original, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy in a naturalistic setting. 3.5 stars for me, but potentially 5 stars for another reader.

Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the review copy!
