I really enjoyed the magical/mystical aspects of the story line and found it to be a lovely read overall. That said, I have some feelings about the way the book discusses/treats familial bonds, especially the way it seems to prioritize genetic relationships over those of the people who are around.

Beautifully written, with lovely sibling relationships. There was quite a bit of repetition that pulled me from the story. The sister's ex-boyfriend really had no point as a character, other than maybe comic relief. And the overall point was a bit too esoteric for me. But I can definitely see the appeal and I would read more of this author's work.

3.5 ⭐️s. Tbh, I didn't expect much out of this one. I ended up having a good time with it though! Explores family dynamics in a speculative way that doesn't feel too hokey.

An easy fast read with a good mystery at its core, while ultimately being about the bond and strain in the relationship of two sisters who are striving to maintain a relationship fractured by the disappearance of their parent at a young age. It was sweet and had enjoyable characterization, but overall, in spite of it being a quick read, the pacing felt slow, and the manner of the dispensing of clues seemed a little far fetched, most of it relying on the sisters happening upon places their mother has been, almost entirely by chance.

It wasn't terrible, but it didn't stick with me in any way. It's a very character-driven story, but the character arcs (and subsequent plot) were very predictable and a bit bland. I related to Zadie, which helped; I think that anyone in a difficult family situation would relate to someone in this story, and it's nice to see yourself reflected, even if it's not pretty. Overall, predictable and average, but enjoyable all the same. It's easy to just get lost in and a quick read.
