I read this for my 11th grade English class and the entire time I kept wishing I was reading some great classic. Instead we read this boring, pointless, and badly written book. There were maybe 3 interesting things that happened and I wasn’t invested in the characters or the setting. At some points the unconventional writing style would shine and things would come off vivid and disturbing, but most of the time it felt stupid and convoluted (the dark is described as autistic at one point???).
It didn’t provide me “insights into humanity” as my English teacher thought it would. I came out this book feeling hollow and bored.

This book is bleak, and probably one of the saddest stories I have ever read. Yet at the same time I couldn't put it down. I think this book will stick with me for a long time.

The world is burning. The rations are low. A father and son make a trek on a lone road towards the coast. The struggle to survive the baron wasteland full of savages weighs heavy on both their shoulders

Wow. What a sad fucking book. Honestly, if you can write a book about two people walking on a road and keep me entertained the whole time, you’re doing something right. The ending punched me where it hurts and I can’t wait to watch the film
