I had known about this book for years and put off reading it until now. It was both what I expected and what I didn’t. The book was way more bleak than I realized. Every second I read this book, I was filled with a deep feeling of existential dread and anxiety. Yet, I kept wanting to go back to book when I wasn’t reading it. It’s not a dense read, only 280 pages but there’s lots of line skips which makes it feel shorter.
This book has very little joy in it, but the few moments of joy you find are meaningful. I don’t know if can ever recommend this book though. At least not to anyone who wants to be happy.

To an extend embodies a lot of what I like least about McCarthy's writing - simple, taut prose but to a fault, which reveals how little is happening rather than providing breathing room to the situation/characters - this would have made for a punchy novella, but instead it becomes repetitive and meandering - and not in a purposeful Waiting for Godot kind of way - and feels like filling pages more than anything else. It's fine - but there is so much excellent post-apocalyptic fiction that this doesn't hold a candle to, especially as the book came out in the mid-2000s.
