I had heard a lot--and a lot of disturbing things--about this book, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. No, that's not true. I expected a grim, disturbing, desolate, make me want to kill myself sort of story. That wasn't what the story was at all.

Don't get me wrong--this *is* a grim tale with some disturbing elements to it (e.g., cannibalism). But it's poetically written (though I found some of the passages a bit inaccessible at times) and has a thin, golden thread of hope running through it.

I loved every single word.

McCarthy swaps his trademark sun-dazzled sierras and glimmering constellations for a desolate, dust-swept wasteland and instead pours every ounce of literary genius into the valiant struggle of the man, the boy and the fire they carry. The Road is an incredibly compelling page-turner that  explores morality and what it is to be human in a world shared by the innocent and the innocence lost.

I guess it was good...It was very depressing without really giving much hope of a better future or any answers as to what happened in the past. The book's sole focus was on a a man and his son as they make their way toward some elusive goal in a lonely and dangerous world. Symbology is all over the place, but the book just sort of is.
