The Road

Cormac McCarthy

3.92 AVERAGE

A harrowing and emotionally draining vision of a desolate future and an articulate tale of survival. It goes from painless and cathartic to intense and heart-rending very seamlessly. More human and grounded in reality compared to other apocalyptic fiction. The father and son share a tender and believable relationship; their dialogue is straightforward on the surface but bears a considerable amount of depth. A simple reply like "okay" can have so many layers. There's no other passages drawing out the significance of a character’s words. You don't need them. You'll just get how they’re feeling due to the gravity of their conversations and the events that brought them on. The matter-of-fact writing style takes some perseverance. Prepare to have your mind fill in a lot of the visual blanks.

I’ve never read a book that made me want to touch grass so badly upon completion.

I will start by saying I like McCarthy's writing style.
This was the first book of his I read and I found the lack of chapters or real "breaks" kind of exhilarating. There are two main characters, so following the dialogue when McCarthy doesn't use quotation marks isn't too hard. The story is extremely captivating, dark brooding melancholy throughout. Maybe the lack of chapters added to the frenzied feel and the need to finish the story; I read it in two days.

4.5 The way this book is written, may make it one of the most unique apocalyptic reads I’ve read to date. It is both heartbreaking and enthralling.
