EDIT ADDED LATER AFTER RECEIVING CRUCIAL INFO: after reading other reviews I now know the author is white. That’s……weird. Objectively. Why did she create an entire Indian family to write from the perspective of😬 I literally assumed the author was Indian. Yikes.

This was cute! I was rec’d it by some chronic illness girlies in sapphlit and I really related to that side of things, having CFS myself. Equating lycanthropy to a chronic illness is honestly so smart and I don’t know why I’d never thought of it that way. Because it totally is! Having it be affected/worsened by
a totally different and “normal” chronic illness was a totally brilliant way to ground something so insane and whacky with just a touch of realism.

Priya and Brigid’s friendship was very sweet, and as much as my gay ass kept waiting for it to turn romantic, it was actually nice to read a book with just two girls who deeply platonically love each other as friends. Spencer started as a really funny one-off appearance character, and then became such a doll as a main character. The dynamic with the three of them was just so fun. Like. I want in on that friend group. The care they have for Brigid is just so sweet. Priya’s parents and siblings were very well fleshed out, as were the online friends.

I did feel that a lot of the discord server sections were a bit too long, and a lot of it was rather cringey, but I mean, we all talk cringey over text right? It was just rather unbearable at points, especially because I audiobooked large chunks of this. The audiobook narrator did not do a great job delivering internet/text speak lol.

This was a funny way to top off spooky season and transition into November. Highly rec to my fellow chronically ill baddies.

Funny, honest, heartbreaking, and sweet. Probably the best example I’ve seen in a long time of rendering virtual conversations in dialogue format—the conversations still feel like characters talking to each other, not puppets providing “clever” exposition for the reader. Some of the references and technology are going to feel dated in a hurry, but that’s inevitable.

The depictions of chronic illness are sensitively handled and the characters’ journeys are enjoyable. I had a hard time putting this one down.

There were some threads that get introduced and never picked back up (one character’s family estrangement, to say it without spoilers, felt like it had some unfinished elements), but on the whole it’s well-written, nicely paced, and fun to read.

I <3 books about friendship. So accurate to the online friendship experience. An amazing narrative about disability/chronic illness and Body Stuff. Also really funny and emotional

Interpreting lycanthropy as a chronic illness is a really interesting premise, and this book does pretty well with it.

There were a few points where I disagreed with the author about how people use Discord and Tumblr.

Do not listen to this on audio. Too many chat handles. But the fun thing about an ebook is that if you click on the YouTube video, it will actually take you to Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up, and it is refreshing to know that people will not ever change.

This was a quick read. It was not hard to read. But it was enjoyable, and I liked it. It was actually really nice to hear Priya talk about her church as like. A positive community of people who care about her. That's what it should be like. Big fan of the lack of religious trauma. (Can't relate 100% but it's nice to hear about y'all.)

I don't have a chronic illness, but I have a lot of friends who do. I couldn't tell you how accurate it is (i mean. Not the werewolf thing, of course.) but it felt respectful and kind.

Five stars for internet girl friends. They are my life.

Total score: 5/5 stars
