I really had a difficult time getting into this one.
Elizabeth Strout is so good she can make me enjoy a novel about a minister

This was my second Elizabeth Strout read. It is a well-written and interesting story, but in my opinion not as good as her first book Amy and Isabelle.
Tyler Caskey became the minister of a parish in the small town of West Annett just after he married. Tragically, his wife died shortly after the birth of his second daughter. Since then, he has found it difficult to compose his sermons, counsel the members of his congregation, and be a good father to his oldest daughter, Katherine. Unfortunately, this leads to mistrust of the young pastor who has few friends and little support from his overbearing mother.

It was a difficult read but worth it. The atmosphere in the town was so strange to me that I must have missed some of the meaning of the events and characters.
I love Strout’s writing and beautiful word choice. This is a moving story about a small town minister who has lost his wife. It’s about grief and, I think, what happens to someone when they won’t allow themselves to grieve. It also has some powerful lessons about the potential for rumors to really hurt people. There are many deep reflections on God and people in the book.

Further exploration of the world created by Elizabeth Strout. Tyler is learning to cope with the death of his wife, whilst caring for his two daughters and his flock. Some religion.
