Black Widow : Raison d'être by Nathan Edmondson

This story arc gives is all about atonement. Black Widow spends her time away from SHIELD taking black ops and espionage jobs as a way to atone for her past. Money she makes from these jobs goes to the families of those she hurt in the past. Her affairs are kept in order by her attorney, Isaiah, who tried to convince her to take more lucrative jobs. He's one of my favorite characters on the series and I love how dry he is. He also has some hidden skills that we see a bit of in this arc.

This story arc really hits home what a lonely existence it is to be a spy. Natasha finds it hard to trust people and, in her line of work, trusting the wrong person could mean death or failure. Natasha is very hard on herself and, though she works to atone for her past sins, I get the feeling that she will never feel like what she's done is enough.

This was definitely a good character study on Black Widow. Smart, deadly and focused, she is not someone you want to mess with. I am interested in seeing where Edmondson takes her from here. I don't think she can keep going at this pace forever and the loneliness is starting to wear on her. I want to see how Natasha evolved.

The artwork by Noto is gorgeous and I love how he uses color. His images are very moody and his style is very different from what I normally associate with superhero comics.

Overall I liked this collection. The plot itself wasn't extremely compelling but the character work on Widow was good and I'd like to see where it goes.

Black Widow is one of my favourites. She's so amazing. The stories and artwork in these issues are just the bomb.

Definitely recommend for those who like Natasha Romanova.

This was really great! The artwork is so original, and I am now completely in love with the style and this Natasha. If you're at all interested in who Black Widow is, but want to keep the enigma that she is as a character, then I definitely recommend this. We learn a lot about Natasha from the narration, but at the same time it all is still very vague, which I think is very befitting of her character.

The plot for me was a little weak. The first three stories felt loosely connected (but very beneficial to the construction of Natasha's character) but then the second three stories felt like a completely different plot that had lots of action, of which I really enjoyed.

However, I did really enjoy this collection because I was more interested in the character Natasha rather than the story in the first place. The story and plot was just an added bonus for me.

I really enjoyed this first volume, it was always really entertaining seeing Natasha do her missions, but it’s getting repetitive (love the artwork tho)

Black Widow's debut

What can I say about Black Widow? The movies have taken a fairly kickass character & turned her into a damsel in distress. This comic definitely turns that around. Sure, she's cold & wants to keep her distance. She's aware of what happens when she gets close to people. But she's also a character who sees what needs to be done & does it. She doesn't suffer fools lightly. The characterization of Black Widow was well done. She's not one dimensional. She has flaws. She makes mistakes, but she doesn't let that stop her from doing what needs doing. She's definitely one of my favorite female characters & I enjoyed seeing her go solo.

Natasha wearing tactical, practical clothing instead of cleavage hanging out? Hell. Yes.

I love the art. I enjoyed reading this for what it is. I tried not to have set expectations, so I think that worked in my favor.

This comic's art and colours are so gorgeous! And the story! Anyone who says that a Black Widow movie would be too difficult to make is getting this book thrown at their heads.
