this book was genuinely so fun! i love superheroes and found myself wondering “why have i never read a book with superheroes?” so i took matters into my own hands and searched far and wide for a book that sounded interesting. astrid had me a little stressed at times with her schedule, but the romance was wholesome and had me wishing that i also had myself a peter parker jacked nerdy boyfriend. for now though, this book will have to suffice. :)

2.5 ⭐️

I liked the characters, although Astrid felt a little flat which is a strange thing to say about a book set in her perspective. Honestly, Max seemed like a more interesting protagonist.

The external conflict was so lightly present in the middle that I forgot about it, and I didn't enjoy the conclusion much. Why did Astrid go save them? And why did that make her want to date Max again?

How to Read This Book (And Not Die of Boredom)

Just to be clear, I don't hate this book and my overall rating would be 2.5 stars, but there are more cons than pros.

I'll start with the good stuff:
• the friendship between Astrid and David was amazing - rarely do we get to see a friendship between a boy and a girl that doesn't turn into something more, or it turns into a love triangle/ second love interest kinda thing
• this book makes fun of all the tropes usually found in superhero books and while it does sometimes get a bit cringy, it's still light-hearted and fun
• Max ♥ he is such a fluffy golden retriever boyfriend you can't help but love

Now onto the cons...

Astrid is very goal-oriented and right now, her goal is to get her best scores on every exam/ presentation/ essay whatever. Which is fine. In fact, the first few chapters, I enjoyed her "study enthusiasm" but by the 50% mark, it started to get annoying. It was constantly shoved down our throats how "college comes first" and how she has lots of schedules for everything and it is what's most important. It was too repetitive and boring.

The other thing I disliked was how I had wildly different expectations for this book. The summary makes you think it's gonna have far more action than it does. Also, I thought there'd be more "superheroing." The whole book is written sort of on the sidelines (which is probably the point the author was trying to make, but I think that should've been made more clear in the summary) and all we get are lines like "this superhero just flew by here"; "that supervillain blew a building nearby" etc. We aren't in this world, we are sort of next to it. I was hoping for something more dramatic than a chem lab partner being slightly annoying and hogging the microscope Astrid wants to use...

The story was okay. I was excited to read a love story in the realm of superheroes. The world was cool. The main characters didn't have very much personality. I didn't really care about either of them. The conflicts that they had were minimal and hard to really see as actual conflicts in a relationship. Also not a good book for someone with anxiety, you see a lot of the MC have anxiety and overthink so many things.

im going to need about 100 more superhero romance books pls and thank you!!

Such a cute book! Although I felt a little sleepy with it in the middle, the turmoil that is Astrid's premed college career is absolutely heart-wrenching, stressful, and highly relatable even if you aren't in that field. A wonderful book with characters that could be fleshed out a bit more, in particular Max, but it's still a rollercoaster read that I recommend to someone in need of an escape... or a little bit of relatability when taking on too many tasks, classes, etc.
I truthfully still enjoyed it for what it was, nothing spectacular, but a fun read!

I really loved the idea of this, and that there were some references to superhero media that were very fun but boy this was a slog for me. The time jumps were super weird and confusing, and I didn't feel like Astrid and Max had much in the way of chemistry.
