It is so hard to write a story that you feel no one has ever written before. And harder still as a reader to find that story. [b:Angel Over My Shoulder|13644229|Angel Over My Shoulder|Pepper Pace|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1339769630s/13644229.jpg|19260280] is such a story. Having read a couple other books by Pepper Pace, I was pretty sure I knew somewhat what her approach might be to this story -- unlikely lovers, damaged people, the ones we overlook, finding love. And there was certainly some of that, but she took it up several notches with this one.
This is a love affair across time, space and reason, that should not happen for reasons well beyond the difference in age and race of the main characters. The utter unlikelihood of their love made me keep turning the page, the curiosity about how she would pull it off. And pull it off she did. This book reads unlike any of the others of hers I've read, and as a writer, I thought I could feel the effortlessness with which she told this story-- like it was one of the stories she was (dare I say it?) destined to write. I see from the rankings of her other books that this one is perhaps not the most popular among those she's written, and I can only guess that it's because it is nontraditional, has less erotic sex and defies expectations that fans may have for this author.
But I was completely satisfied. I read this book as a reader AND as a writer, and found that my satisfaction was not dimmed in the least on either count. So far, by FAR my favorite of Pepper Pace's work. Excellently done.
