An enjoyable read that only creeped me out after I was finished and turned the lights off. Delightfully grotesque
where the “fairyland” in question is anything but enchanting, fantastical in only how full of rot and decay it is. I also enjoyed watching the protagonist realize her perfect sister is actually a monster.

There were some unresolved things- mostly if the changelings are “wearing” the skin of those that were killed, how was Iris able to find the bodies of the girls? Is there a reason being a changeling gives them such weird compulsion/intoxication powers? Agnes’ story felt both unexplained and unnecessary to the plot- had great potential to be a bigger character that I found lacking. Tyler Yang was also an enjoyable character with an interesting &relevant backstory, but his interaction with Iris made me uncomfortable (she is… 17). It felt like it would have been appropriate if the characters were slightly older with Iris in college instead of high school. Lastly, I know authors can’t really control the book cover (which is BEAUTIFUL) but it super bugged me that the character is brunette w/brown eyes and soft features- the opposite of how the hollow sisters are described. (Unless it isn’t one of them?)

This book saved me from an arc reading slump. I almost didn't request this book because it's a "fantasy"/speculative fiction book, and I haven't been reading much of that lately. However, this book was such a win! I loved it. It's dark, gritty, and sometimes disgusting...but it's also beautiful. Look at me loving the dark doorways stories. This is Wayward Children or The Hazel Wood for people who really want it to GO THERE. Give me dark witchy sister stories any time!

The writing is stunning. The rich, lyrical writing style is dark but soft in the most precious way. The sibling relationships, and the lengths you'd go to for a sibling are so real. I adored our trio of sisters, even if they terrified me at times. This was my perfect brand of beauty and darkness.

The writing is raw and doesn't shy away from the bloody and body horror side of things, but in a good way? There're mentions of drug and alcohol use/abuse among underage/young twenties kids. There's violence and kidnapping/missing children. There is loss of a parent, loss of a sibling, suicide, and a lot of other bloody murders.

So, why am I recommending it? If you want a dark read, a mysterious witchy read that is super atmospheric and focuses on siblings...this is your thing. It was just what I needed when slogging through ARCs that kept missing the mark.
