Peterborough and the Kawarthas is a collection of writings looking at different aspects of the region from the perspectives of human + physical geography.  It is divided roughly evenly between the two, with the first portion of the book focusing on physical (ex. geology, flora and fauna, climate, hydrology) and the latter on human (municipal planning issues, demographic and population growth patterns, historical landmarks).  I appreciate the inclusion of bibliographies + further reading for each of the chapters, as well as a section of 'field trips' and maps.  Inevitably some parts of the book are out of date now (particularly elements of the latter half such as information on shopping areas, the local arts scene, etc) and some of the early chapters were a bit difficult for me as a reader who has no background in the natural sciences, but the wealth of information about the local natural environment makes this book worth a read for anyone living here or otherwise interested in the region's natural history.
