Reread February 2022

Very glad I reread this just because I didn’t remember a lot of it and I do want to try and prioritize this series this year. I listened to the audiobook and thought that it was very well done and just a pleasure to listen to.

I still love the atmosphere and the setting and our characters. It just wasn’t 5 stars like my old rating with it. It’s maybe more of a 4-4.5 still because I still really like the story and it’s very good but it’s not like OBSESSED level to hit 5 stars.

Really hoping to finally continue with this series though because the entire third part of this book is the reason that truly gets me excited to read on!

First read December 2018

This was the PERFECT winter read! I’m so glad that I saved this for December because it was the perfect choice for it.

I loved the setting, the characters, the fairytale/Russian folklore part of this story. It was so wonderful! It was such an engrossing story. I would pick it up and easily fly through so much of it. It was so hard to put down. I don’t know much about Russian folklore so this was very interesting to see something like this.

The atmosphere of this novel and Katherine Arden’s writing was so magical and amazing and I can’t wait to read more. I’m so excited to pick up the next book to see what happens.

4 or 5?!!!

Really good! Amazing, magical writing.

Idk if this would be a 5 because I must admit I did wonder where the story was going at one point. The plot was a little blurry. But I really enjoyed it soooo I'll think about it and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Was loving all the characters and scenery and mini-stories until about 3/4 the way through when suddenly it felt like every 4th word was “stallion” and people were still degrading everything female. The ending didn’t save it.

Ok read. Kind of weird, kind of magicky. The snowy Russian setting made it a good book to read in the winter but never got all that invested in the storyline or characters.

The entire book is so hauntingly beautiful; very much reads like a fairytale!

An excellent Russian fairy tale, in a way

This was a reread. When I read this book for the first time, I was slightly disappointed. I liked the next two novels in the trilogy much better.

Returning now to the start after having grown to love Vasya and Morozko, I enjoyed the pace and the set up and the foreshadowing.

I'm bumping my rating from 3.5 to 4.25.
