I read this in 2012 and tried to reread it in 2019. I didn’t enjoy my first read, but it’s my co-worker’s favorite book so I decided to give it another try.

Still not a fan. I didn’t find the relationships between any of the characters to be tragically romantic, but rather abusive and hateful. I despised the spiteful cast of characters and didn’t care what happened to them anymore, so I quit my reread about 3/4 into the book.

Let me just say - if women could actually drop dead of anger, there’d be none of us left on the planet.

Skip this glorified literary soap opera.

I have such mixed feelings. On one hand, I despised the characters but ont he other I know we aren't supposed to like them.

I really struggled with how I would rate this. Having never been required to read it or teach it, I am reading it only now. I'm not a huge fan of early English writing but found I was enjoying her archaic language and expression. At first. At times, everything read as if it were being yelled or whined with hand to forehead in huge monologues. The characters were so unlikeable partly due to the selfishness and cruelty they exhibited so easily. Surely, their dispositions were not representative of the time period but of this tainted family. Still, the plot and themes were developed in such a way I looked forward to reading. So, the classic gets four stars.

Wow

A family member said they didn't enjoy this book but i found it oddly compelling. A great story regardless of how one feels personally on a character.
