Good book. I wish I had read this 20 year ago when my boss had told me to.

I went into this thinking it would be a 'teach your kids about money' book. It is not. If getting rich is your ultimate goal in life and you're willing to put in the time and effort (this is key) to gain the knowledge you'll need so you can quit your day job, then this is the book for you. And don't forget the necessity of self-discipline. He doesn't offer a get rich quick formula, it's mostly guidelines and some of his advice can be vague.
Kiyosaki's writing had an odd mix of genuineness/sound wisdom and obnoxiousness with the occasional guilt-trip. There are some valuable takeaways though:
Kiyosaki's writing had an odd mix of genuineness/sound wisdom and obnoxiousness with the occasional guilt-trip. There are some valuable takeaways though:
- financial literacy is beneficial for everyone, and most people are severely lacking here (he says financial intelligence requires knowledge of accounting, investing, understanding markets, and the law)
- promotion of continuing self-education, which he refers to as your greatest wealth
- know a little about a lot (generalization)
a few things I didn't like:
- he tends to make generalizations about the middle class, for instance he claims they have expenses equal to their income and more liabilities than assets
- he assumes that those in the poor and middle class are fiscally conservative because they can't afford to take risks, while some people may be risk averse in all areas of their life, or don't care to be rich, or currently have a job that allows them to spend time with their family which may be what's most important to them
- he believes our culture has educated us to believe that the love of money is the root of all evil - no sir, the Bible states that, and I'll take its' wisdom over yours
my favorite quote from the book: "If I could leave one single idea with you, it is that idea. Whenever you feel short or in need of something, give what you want first and it will come back in buckets. That is true for money, a smile, love, or friendship."
