Thank you to NetGalley for an Arc in exchange for an honest review.
I love the game of baseball, I love Science Fiction and Thrillers are hard to put down. The author builds a pretty unique world and there's definitely a lot of baseball but, for some reason I had a hard time coming back to this one. I'm not sure if it's the writing style or the "Unbelievability" throughout parts of the story.
To keep it short and sweet this one follows our main character Kobo who is trying to figure out what happened to a loved one who passes away very unexpectedly. The best part of this story for me was that Kobo is a pretty badass character in the sense that he felt like a real human. I also liked that the author brought up modern day political issues and used them to fuel the main plot but also did so in a way that isn't annoying. Overall I thought it was okay, I will definitely be giving this author another shot in the future.

This was a pretty fun read. I was looking for something a bit different to what I had developed a trend of reading and this was pretty perfect. A murder mystery mixed in with Scifi of buying boy parts. Don't we all look at ourselves and pick out certain aspects we would change if given the chance? This main character can actually do that. With just knowing that knowledge alone, I was intrigued. Beginning this story had me laughing and the more I read, the more intrigued I became. It isn't all humorous, but it is all pretty fun and wonderful.

The Body Scout is a frighteningly realistic exploration of what could happen when big pharma gets its hands on sports. This book is well written and exciting.

Crazy book that seems like the premise wouldn't work, but it really comes together for one hell of a fast-paced thriller.

A main focus of this book is futuristic baseball, and although I'm not a baseball fan, I still managed to get caught up in the story. It made me think of a future in which humans might have the ability to augment themselves as they do in the book, and sadly, I think many people would pay the price for it.

This was a really entertaining sci-fi/thriller.

The Body Scout is an interesting novel, and its synopsis is what made me request it on NetGalley. I love any kind of science fiction thriller with a dystopian future and corporate-owned identities. Watching people fight back against the corporation will forever be one of the classic parts of science fiction. The Body Scout is no different, and the way it intertwines corporations into baseball was a great idea.

Being a biology major, I love anything genetic or biology based in stories. The premise of this book was pretty fun, having baseball players be subjected to genetic alterations and drug testing in order to play better. The major drug companies now own the baseball teams.

What I didn't care for was the baseball. I'm not going to give this book a "bad rating" because I knew it was about baseball going in. The baseball really isn't the forefront of the story either, so if you're concerned about not knowing anything about the sport, don't worry. If it's something really to be explained, Michel explains it. I did have a hard time connecting to the characters because they were so passionate about something I really couldn't care less about. The passion with the author, though, helped raise my rating.

It was also pretty funny seeing the baseball teams names, such as the Monsanto Mets.

Thank you to Net Galley, Orbit Books, and Lincoln Michel for this advanced review copy! The Body Scout releases on September 21st.

An imaginative, satirical cyberpunk story that imagines if the steroid era of major league baseball was taken to a dystopian extreme. The language is fun, and the world is well-imagined, but the stakes of the story feel a little disjointed. Considering the setting and crime-noir vibe, I expected the story to escalate toward either thwarting a high-stakes disaster or enacting a deeply personal revenge. The novel tries to do both, and in doing so accomplishes neither.
