I gave the book only three stars because I felt like I already knew most of the things in the book. There were no real surprises. The writing is good and of course I admire Mrs. Obama so I would recommend this book, I was just disappointed that most of the stories were pretty well known.

My rating is purely biased because I love Michelle Obama. It was a bit slow but nothing listening on 1.5x or 2x couldn't solve. The ending is very scary but that's only because of where we are today as a country 🙃

Michelle is a great storyteller with fascinating commentary on her ordinary-turned-extraordinary life. I really enjoyed this candid look into her life, from her upbringing, education, career, dating, marriage, road to the Presidency, and two terms in the White House. I especially appreciated her conflicting feelings on giving up her career, not being a traditional first lady, and defining that role for herself. Easy, enjoyable and insightful read.
Loved the audiobook and highly recommend. Was a little long and some parts could have been cut but I fell in love with the Obamas again.
Come back to us, Michelle!
Things that will stick with me:
- Failure is a feeling before it is an outcome
- The exhaustion of being a minority
- Barack staying back from an important vote in IL when their daughter was sick in Hawaii
- Campaigning sounds awful and exhausting
- The complexities of their position: really privileged and watched out for, but at the expense of spontaneity and privacy
- Michelle's idea that if the media was going to follow her, she was going to take them places
- The Obama's commitment to hiring and serving minorities, military families, etc.
Honest, relatable and quick to read.
