At once poignant and accessible. Like an honest conversation with an intelligent but still cool girlfriend.

Listening to “Becoming” on audiobook is like taking a walk with Michelle Obama while she tells you about her life. She calls herself an ordinary person on an extraordinary journey, and her journey from little girl growing up on the South Side of Chicago to first lady is quite a story, but even more impressive is the intelligence, hard work, fierce dedication, and just plain grit that made it possible. I was fascinated to see what it’s actually like to live in the White House and learn little details like how hard Michelle practiced for her carpool karaoke with James Corden, which looks so joyfully natural and effortless on YouTube, but my real takeaways from her memoir are twofold. One is her appreciation for the people who believed in her, who encouraged and helped her along the way. The second is actually a question that she hears Barack ask at a neighborhood training when they are first dating: “Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?” I’m grateful and inspired that they both chose to work for the world as it should be.
