Not as strong as book one but still amazing and enjoyable!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy of this book.

I loved The God and the Gumiho so I had high expectations for this book and it did not disappoint.

After the ending of book one, The God and the Gwishin follows Yoo Kisa, now reincarnated into Kim Hani - who once again has died. Only this time she is now a gwishin and bound to work on a cruise ship in the underworld. Our favourite moody god Seokga has been through it over the 30+ years looking for any trace of Yoo Kisa, his hope being lifted after finding out they were connected by the red string of fate only to be crushed when he once again was unable to find her. That is until he stumbles across Kim Hani working on the underworld cruise ship he was sent on for vacation. Kim Hani possess no memories of her past life and has a totally different personality so the idea if the two really are the same person despite sharing a soul plays a huge part in the novel. I loved seeing Kim Hani and Seokga's relationship develop over the course of the book as it is widely different to how Yoo Kisa and Seokga interacted.

Sophie Kim is slowly working her way up to becoming one of my favourite authors. Her voice really shines in this book and Seokga once again proves how much I love him with his grumpy personality but soft side for Kisa.

I loved seeing some old characters make an appearance in this book especially Somi. She had been through so much in the last book and I loved seeing how her character evolved during the 30+ years spent after the death of Yoo Kisa. The new characters also so fun and silly.

The Korean folklore is once again explored really well in this book and helped flesh out the world really well.

I did guess the villain very early on because it was quite obvious (as really there was no other reason for this character to exist lol) but I did not see some of the plot points coming.

If you loved the God and the Gumiho you are sure to fall in love with the characters all over again in this book. I can't wait for the possible book three??? Especially with that ending??!!??!!

I enjoyed this sequel so much more than the first novel! I think it was a combination of Seokga's yearning, the cruise ship in the underworld, and the fact that Hwanin turned into a baby. The return of Somi and the addition of Hajun was great too! It was fun to see familiar and new faces interacting with one another. Seokga and Kisa's attraction and connection to one another was unmatched. Their interactions were really funny. I loved how analytical she was and how smitten Seokga was with everything she did despite his apprehension about her being different from Hani. All the different little plot twists too were exciting and thrilling. I felt like I was learning something new about the sinister plot with each chapter which I loved. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I'm interested to see what happens next with this series.

I am so amazed by how good this book was, probably even better than The God and The Gumiho

For starters, I loved Yoo Kisa’s personality, and it was really interesting to see how she and Seokga fell in love again despite being an entirely different person. Seokga was also a lot more interesting than in the previous book, probably because he wasn’t just annoyed all the time. I thought the string of fate between them was a pretty cute plot device, adding some levity to tense moments.

Somi and Hajun were also amazing side characters as well. In the last book I didn’t really think much of Somi until
her betrayal,
but in this book, her character got way more complicated and interesting aside from “shy younger BFF.” The conflict between her and Seokga was also good, and I liked the friendship she developed with Kisa. Hajun was very new and didn’t really do much, but he was still so loveable and I liked him just being around for Kisa and Seokga.

The plot was definitely good, but the stakes weren’t necessarily that high for me at first, unlike in the last book where the enemy was dangerous from the start. And the way the plot twist was revealed was kinda cheap to me—
you’re telling me that the villain just conveniently laid out her evil plans in a journal that could have been stolen by anyone?
But once we got to know who the real villain was, the plot caught up. The villain,
Jang the therapist,
was certainly very scary and conniving, and definitely was a better villain than Eodum from the last book. I wish she could have been a villain for longer, because she felt very effective.

Overall, this was such an amazing duology! It is definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who wants a good fantasy romance with amazing plots.

⭐️ The God and the Gwisin ⭐️

Seokga the trickster god is reformed. But he is also lost and lonely, looking for his soulmate in the most unlikely of places.

Following the heartbreaking events of The God and the Gumiho - we are back with our beloved Seokga. This book is pure pure KDrama and I’m so here for it. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and I’m so glad it lived up to my expectations!!

Without spoilers, the way the previous book ended had me in tears. But this redeemed it. This was adorable.  It had it all: found family, romance, mystery, plot twists and mythological creatures. I honestly loved it so much! Kind of sad it’s come to an end - I feel like I could read about these characters forever.
