More or less neutral on some elements of the writing style, but the story is good fun. Interesting takes on some basic romance and mystery tropes.

The bit at Spock's family home where Sarek is playing the Vulcan equivalent of a lute (a song he played for Amanda on their wedding day, the SAP) while Kirk nods off on the couch and Bones sits with a drink to listen....That's my shit? That's my e n t i r e domestic bridge crew shit. Lorrah knows what the fans want.

The murderer was so obvious I genuinely started to wonder if everyone had some kind of space travel-induced brain damage.

That was a good book; I simply devoured it and would have loved for it to go on for hours more! While the villain was spotted easily, there was enough going on for me to second guess myself and type out theories as I read and the secondary issues alone could have been a standalone novel. I love the deeper look into the Star Trek lore that the tie in novels gives us both in terms of the customs and laws of those living in the Federation and of the deeper characterization that we get about character both regular and reoccurring.

Lots of fun! I really liked the Sarek/Amanda/Spock interactions, and the murder mystery was quite good (complete with Vulcans going "but... murder is illogical!"). I knew who it was WAY before Kirk, though. :-D

It falls short in writing style on occasion and there are some typos, but overall a good read if you want to more story on Spock's parents after the Journey to Babel.

(Extra, extra! Get your flashback to nerdy little Rebecita!) The first line? "Fire photon torpedos!" Yeah. A change of pace from the last Star Trek novel I read. This one is also centered around Vulcan culture, but instead of being deeply sensitive and thought provoking it's... pretty insulting. Way to bring Star Trek into the cutting edge of the 80s by harping on the Vulcans' "ESP." Cringe. The plot was contrived and the murder mystery was super lame and obvious. Terrible characterization - even Kirk isn't quite THAT stupid. Diagnosis: Worse than the show. The people who saw me with this on the plane were probably right to judge me. But an easy read, points for nostalgia, and I totally will read the sequel. Ahem.
