Not the biggest fan.
I did not like the writing.
The pacing was off (it really dragged at some points).
There was very little plot (I'm a huge plot girl, so just "vibes and thoughts" is not my style).
The magic system was too vague.

The story idea was good.
The characters were interesting (would have liked a bit more backstory on some of them).
The mystery was intriguing.

Overall, it was okay. I probably won't read the second book.

Few notes before jumping in. I made the error of starting this originally as the audiobook. I paused and went back to read it as it was much easier to process that way. I also went in completely blind. It was a rec with no info and I opted to keep it that way till the first page.

Onward

This was one of those moments I could use decimals on a Star. Give it rather a 3.5-.7 rather than the full 4. It was slow getting into. With it being mainly character focused you didn’t have a plot to pull you through but rather the writing. I personally really enjoy this style of writing. For some it may be too much of a word salad and there were definitely some parts where I did want it to pick up pace a bit instead of describing the same thing in a few different ways but the writing is done well enough the majority of the time to keep pulling you through.

With it being a character based book the attempt of diversity was there and it was mostly accomplished. There was however the same baseline where most the characters were difficult to get into until a bit further into the book. For the most part every character feels like a ‘I’m the best with no weaknesses’ bit (well minus Libby and Tristan even they tho had several moments of exception) and each had such an arrogance to them it almost took too long to get into a character. I believe I saw someone else say that once you get past the first chunk it gets easier to get hooked. I agree since this is around the part it gets easier to picks sides with the characters.

I feel like all these feels super negative hold on

Book 53 of 2024: The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Each decade, the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to earn a place in the Alexandrian Society, the foremost secret magical society in the world. But only five can move past their first year. The chosen will secure a life of power and prestige beyond their wildest dreams. Each of the six newest recruits has their reasons for accepting the Society’s elusive invitation. Even if it means growing closer than they could have imagined to their most dangerous enemies― or risking unforgivable betrayal from their most trusted allies― they will fight tooth and nail for the right to join the ranks of the Alexandrians. Even if it means they won’t all survive the year.

This book had been on my TBR for quite some time, and I’m glad I finally got around to it. I listen to it on audio, and there was a different narrator for each of the six candidates, and I thought that made it really fun and interesting, and it also helped me keep track of whose story was whose. I really enjoyed the dark academia of vibes of the story. The characters were all very different from one another, but I love to see how they changed and developed throughout the book, as well as their relationships with one another. Each of the characters had their own problems, but as a cast together, they were really enjoyable. I had two problems with this book that distracted from me liking it more. First, the plot felt a little slow at times, probably due to the introduction of all of the characters and the and their magical world. Secondly, for  a story about magicians, I also wanted to see some more magic used throughout the story. This is a trilogy so I think that these two things will be addressed and hopefully not be an issue in the remaining books in the series. Overall, this was a very intriguing premise for a series and I am definitely interested in reading the next book!

This book took me SO long to read.
Was really excited for this book, but it was honestly disappointing. It did have some really good parts, but 80% of it just fell completely flat and was honestly a little boring. I found myself wishing I was just done with this book already (I clearly have issues DNFing a book lol). Not a huge fan of this writing style either :/

The author has some magic of her own; taking an interesting idea and doing an awful job with it. She can also make an average sized book feel like it never ends.

What I Liked -
The cover - looks great.

What I didn’t like -
The swearing - it’s said that profanity is the sign of a weak kind, and boy does it show here.

The characters - not a single likable character in the book. Characters all fit their tropes; The Pretty Girl, The Recluse, Rebelling Against Dad, etc.

The story - the premise was interesting but was ruined by the author. Pretty sure ChatGPT could’ve written a better and more cohesive story.

If you are fan of V.E. Schwab, particularly if you like The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, you will probably like this book. Their writing styles strike me as similar. Personally, I was underwhelmed by Addie LaRue, and I feel underwhelmed by The Atlas Six  as well. To paraphrase one of my old coworkers,  V.E. Schwab's works have the appearance of darkness but none of the bite.  The same is true of The Atlas Six. It feels like a book that desperately wants to dark and edgy, but doesn't know how to get there, so it ends up having the same vibes as a middle schooler discovering black eyeliner for the first time.  Personally, when it comes to dark academia, I want a book that hits harder. This book is all style, no substance, when it comes to the vibes, and so it just feels so empty. Not a series I plan to continue.
