I thought this book was rather boring and didn't keep my attention for very long. Ended up finding it very predictable too.

Interesting take on the vampire world!

What an interesting take on the vampire world. Larissa Ione is truly a gifted author. She has a way of building a new world that captivates the reader. I must admit that the Native American twist on the vampire world we are all used to took just a little bit of hesitation. But her way of weaving the story makes you forget your "vampire prejudices", sort of speak.

The thing that bothered me was how the vampire race was taken as slaves? Aren't they so physically superior to humans. But that aside I loved this new world Ms. Ione has introduced us to.

2.5 I can understand why Ione is a popular author. This first novel in her new urban vampire series is filled with action, and contains some interesting fantasy premises. The main characters have interesting backstories, and those backstories create clear conflict and tension between the two love interests. Both characters are fairly empty, with little going on personality-wise, which allows readers to slot themselves in in the characters' places. Although the fact that the "innocent, sheltered" heroine snarks and curses just like the former military hero makes them feel even flatter than they are. Not my preferred type of of character, but I can see the appeal.

I was intrigued by the fantasy premise, but found its presentation not very well thought-out. In this world, vampires (which have been around in America for about 400 years) were only discovered by humans in the past century. Humans somehow enslaved vampires, even though vampires have abilities greater than humans do; Ione never explains how this enslavement happened, or what keeps the vampires enslaved. We all want to think that we'd have protested against slavery if we'd lived in antebellum America, that we'd have protested against the treatment of Native Americans, too; Ione allows readers to indulge in such a fantasy second-hand via rooting for these vampires.

It was completely unbelievable that the book's heroine, who inherited her family's company (which played a major role in the enslavement of vampires) had no idea of all the horribly abusive treatment the company was doling out to vampires, something we have to believe if we are to stomach her moral choices.

Ione plays with the "being turned against your will" trope by having the heroine turned into a vampire through the machinations of her evil half-brother, a human, rather than due to a vampire directly. Not sure it matters all that much, though; good and evil are so clear-cut in this book that rooting for anyone other than this one particular clan of vampires seems idiotic.

Is part of the appeal of current-day urban fantasy and paranormal books this stark, heavyhanded distinction between the good guys and the bad guys?

After finishing this I'm a little upset with myself that I didn't read it sooner, like when it came out!Upon reading the first sentence I was drawn into the story and I didn't want to put it down.

After being attacked by one of her family's "servant" vampires during an uprising when she was eight years old, Nicole Martin grew up studying the physiology of vampires. When she finally returns home twenty years after the attack, she's forced (as stated in her father's will) to take over the company from her brother.

Riker's wife, now dead, was a servant in the Martin household. Specifically she was Nicole's nanny. Riker blames the Martins for her death and when a female vampire belonging to another clan is taken from the Moonbound Clan's protection by the very company that Nicole Martin now runs, Riker feels now is a great opportunity to seek revenge for the wrongs done to him as well as his clan. When they see each other memories and revelations from the past may keep both Riker and Nicole from moving on.

This is the first book by Larissa Ione that I've read. But what immediately stood out for me was the interesting twist she put on vampire mythology where vampire are servants to humans. Slaves would probably be a more accurate term. As you can imagine, vampires are not too thrilled with their status and are constantly looking for a way out. Humans, for all that they are technically weaker than vampires, prove more resourceful because not only are vampires indentured to humans, but humans have been running experiments on vampires for various cures.

The relationship that forms between Nicole and Riker starts out tenuous at best. She's wary of vampires for obvious reasons and he's not too fond of humans himself, specifically if that human is a Martin. Since their attraction to one another is undeniable, their hang ups are definitely something they have to work through in order for their relationship to work at all. I thought that back and forth perspectives between the vampires and the humans (shown specifically through Nicole and Riker) was interesting.

Overall, the story sucked me in for all that I could guess where a lot of it was going. This is by no means a bad thing. I think Larissa Ione successfully set up a very interesting series. There were a lot of issues introduced that will be solved over the course of the series. She's included some great secondary characters whose stories I want to read. The way things are left off I'm definitely excited for [b:Chained by Night|15803815|Chained by Night (MoonBound Clan Vampire, #2)|Larissa Ione|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1394143511s/15803815.jpg|21527276] so I guess part of me is happy I waited so long to read this one because now the second book is out.

I'd really like a 3.5 Star option for this book. Set in a world where vampires are servants and lab rats for humans except for the "wild" vampire clans hiding in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. While it's an interesting world setup, I'm hesitant to call it a "fresh new take on vampires," because while the power dynamic of global society makes the vampires the underdogs, the vampires themselves are very familiar: they're apex predators, can move super fast, their bites are orgasm inducing, they are both born and turned, they follow alpha male leadership, have a mate-bonding genetic component, and are snarly growly fist-swinging macho asshats when it suits them. These vampires supposedly originated among Native American tribes, and there's just enough appropriation that you can't forget it, but . . . it's done in such a way that it feels like misappropriation and leaves me very uncomfortable.

Plot setup: On a mission to get back one of his people, the vampire hero kidnaps the heroine, heir and human CEO of a nasty-research-on-vampires company, to force her to reveal the location of the missing (taken) vampire. Of course, the heroine has a heart of gold and a traumatic past that have caused her to be more of an Absent Minded Science Professor than businesswoman, so she doesn't know how horrible her company really is. She is also completely oblivious of how to play company politics in spite of having been groomed for CEO. Honestly, this heroine wouldn't have been blindsided by any of the plot twists if she'd just watched more SCANDAL.

I liked it well enough, and I did go on to read the second book.

Wow what a read!!!!

It was a bit of a rollercoaster for a while as i was unsure certain people wouldn't overcome prejudices.

Riker and Nicole with a sprinkling of moon fever and betrayals fortunately find the way to each other.

I thought both Hunter and Myne were interesting characters, unfortunately for me the epilouge took a biit too much of a dark turn for me as an introduction to Hunters book (Babies, kids and demons are a big no no for me) so don't think i will carry on.....

Still i loved Riker and Nicole's book

Moon Bound Clan Vampires book 1

Larissa Ione gave us a twist of what it means to be a vampires in Bound By Night. Yes they are still strong as all get out. They have powers that humans don’t and have the need of blood. They are still the sexy vampires that we have come to love. Ms. Ione has created a world where vampires are enslaved and persecuted. Vampire are captured tested on, trained and made to be servants to humans.

With that being said, I really liked this book. Putting the vampire as a lesser being in human eyes, and making them fight for what they want and need. I loved the Native American tones set into the book. Ms. Ione has done a wonderful job of building this new vampire world. I am a sucker for world building, Bound By Night doesn’t let down. I look forward to see what is going to be happening for the MoonBound Clan.

As I enjoyed our lead lady and vamp, however some of the secondary characters of the story really stood out for me. Nicole and Riker are fighting the same battle on opposite sides of the coin. Each of them dealing with loss in the past from vampires for her, humans for him. Watching these two hardheaded people try to work through the issues of their past, while dealing with the proverbial shit hitting the fan, while trying not to feel the raging emotions that are coming from both of them was quite entertaining.

Myne is the big scary guy you want to have around when you need to intimidate someone. He’s silent and deadly. We get a glimpse of his past and this book that makes me definitely want to read more about him.

Hunter, the clans leader. He is always willing to do what is right for his clan. Sexy and a bit mysterious, I really want to learn more about Hunter.

Bound By Night is a great start to this series. Action that kept me turning the pages. A different way of life for vampires. Great world building! Hands down, it was a good book!

This chilling and heavily emotional novel opens to us a new and scary world where vampires are second class citizens that are forced into slavery and treated as nothing more than property. (Being a student of human nature I can say that I could perfectly imagine this happening if another species was ever found to exist among us.) Nicole lives in the upper echelons of society though she has never fit in among them. Her tragic past has given her a healthy fear of the vampires that live around her, but when she is forced to deal with her worst nightmare she steps up to the plate and handles the situation the best way she knows how. Riker has let his hate and rage fester for Nicole and her family for a long time and letting go of it is just not something he’s willing to do, even if it means pushing away a woman he is coming to trust and have softer feelings for. When faced with the choice of learning to depend on one another and trust in their instincts or possibly losing their lives to the true enemy of both of their pasts, both Riker and Nicole have to accept that sometimes the hardest choice is really the only choice we can live with. Riker and Nicole burn up the pages while breaking your heart, and I can guarantee there will be at least one if not more times you will wish you could reach out and kick Riker in the balls, but in the end Riker redeems himself as a true hero and a match made for Nicole. Two broken characters, each with terrifying and haunting memories of their past, each unwilling to let go of their prejudices, forced to work together for a common goal, one that could forever change their future, in one of the best written novels I’ve read recently. Who could ask for more in a story? I cannot wait for more in this series, and am dying to know whose story will be next, though I certainly have my suspicions. Hold on to your hats folks, it's gonna be a wild and crazy road as we travel through the world of the MoonBound Vampire clan! Bring it on Larissa, bring it on.
