Well, well, well Mr. Sendak...what have you been smoking? What the hell is this? Young pig wants a birthday party. Mean aunt says no. Aunt goes out shopping, young pig throws a bash anyway. Mean aunt comes back and flips her bird. I want the Wild Rumpus back.

This was a weird one. As much as it pains me to say this, I didn't really like it all that much.

I forgot that this was a Sesame Street cartoon until I read the Kirkus review. I adore Maurice Sendak, I think he is really intriguing. I admit though...I like the cartoon better... it brought back wonderful memories! http://youtu.be/E2TVYdQU3-I

For me, this was the story of a boy (pig) who organizes a birthday party without telling his aunt (guardian), and gets in a bit of trouble over it. She celebrates his birthday for the first time ever, but does not like the idea of a party. So, he throws a party for himself, but doesn't tell her. After she leaves, the house becomes filled with all kinds of crazy characters "drinking brine" - bizarre on several levels - and having a "fine" time. When the aunt gets back, she's upset, but they pronounce their love for each other, and all's well.

There are a few confusing bits: for example, why does the aunt suddenly seem to remember that it's Bumble-Ardy's birthday later in the day? She'd already given him a present (a cowboy suit).

I'll be interested to hear what kids think of this. I haven't read it with them yet. There's a hedonistic recklessness that I think will appeal to them. And then the fear of punishment, when aunt comes home - that should create some tension. And I wonder what they'll notice in the illustrations; they're so detailed and random and wacky.

Bumble-Ardy isn't used to having birthday parties, so when he decides to celebrate his ninth, he goes a little overboard. This book was a little strange, mainly because Sendak wrote in a very rhyme-heavy hand that bordered on the ridiculous. The book was enjoyable, though I don't know if I would read it over and over again.

This is a book about a pig who never has a birthday party until he turns nine. Then he throws a masquerade rager at his aunt's house and she's pissed. One of the masquerade costumes is a racist depiction of a Native American person...

Dear god, Yuck! The pictures are creepy, the rhyme is strange, the angry aunt seems to turn demonic towards the end. Did the publishers lose a bet? Is that why this was accepted. Do they just publish any old thing that Maurice Sendak sends them now?
Yuck!

I am not sure if I understood the whole idea of this book. I was a little confused. I will need to re-read after a few days and see how it feels when I take more time. I appreciate some of the humor and the Where the Wild Things Are nods, but as a whole the book felt a little odd.

Bumble-Ardy said, “Screw y’all; I’m throwing my own party!”

The illustrations remind me of Swine Lake, which he illustrated for James Marshall. It’s not as bright and happy and sweet as Where The Wild Things Are—in fact, parts of it are kind of creepy and dark, macabre, grotesque—but I love his imaginative illustrations.

It’s a little bizarre for a children’s title, but I like it—and it has a lovely rhyme.

I wonder what a child might think of it. I would certainly venture to share it, despite the reviews bc it’s so (mature?) unusual for a children’s book stylistically.

I think it’s cool to see him do different styles of art, so that’s my 2¢.
