Trippy and fun. Also very graphic. Lost points for how confusing the set up was.

The premise of this book was promising, and I enjoyed it up until the last third. I read this book in two days, anxious to understand the mystery involving Erin and her ex-boyfriend, Silas. Unfortunately, the last part of the novel fell flat for me. I liked the paranormal aspect and historical descriptions throughout the beginning and middle, but it turned gory toward the end. It was as if the writer was on a specific path originally and took a wrong turn before finishing the book. Definitely left some loose ends, and the final outcome seemed too "out there".

2.5 stars for premise and readability, as I was eager to keep reading.

Addiction, bad relationships, ghosts and history. There is A Lot going on here. Ultimately, it not work for me, but there is a good book here, and it might be for you.

I didn't care for this one.
What I liked: the detailed descriptions of gore/body horror/drug trips. the character's battle with addiction. the descriptions of mushrooms.
What I didn't like: the characters. I didn't feel for Erin at all. There was a lack of characterization for her outside her obsession with Silas. I don't even know what she looks like. The pace of the book in general. How all over the place the different themes were.
I was too lost in the multiple themes going on to see the
Silas reveal
at the end. Thought that concept was pretty interesting, wish it could have happened sooner.

Overall I wanted to like it, but it fell flat. About halfway through I was really excited to see where it went, then it just went downhill. Meh. Bummer from an author I like.

This is a book that reads as very disturbing, but not because of gory description (which there are plenty of), but more because in true southern gothic fashion it takes a supernatural look at addiction through the lense of grief. It's difficult to see an extreme of a feeling that likely everyone will experience at some point in their life.

The plot is full of despair, body horror, social commentary, and genuinely creepy moments that made my skin crawl. Reminders of the death and horror that is part of our country's unfortuante history and current every day life.
