The ideas behind the book were intriguing but I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

This book might be for someone, but it definitely wasn’t for me.

So. Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman.

Erin, Silas, Amara, and Tobias are friends, mostly led by Silas, who, essentially, do a bunch of stupid college kid shit. Silas becomes an addict and is really good at bossing Erin around when he needs anything. Eventually, Silas dies from an overdose, and Tobias introduces the rest to Ghost, a drug that lets you see the dead.

Amara is smart and gets away, but Erin, no backbone Erin, is sucked in. Oof. This takes some weird, creepy twists but wasn't scary. No character had redeemable qualities, in my opinion, so I was ok with the outcome.

Unfortunately what had some interesting plot points (the main one being a drug that can make you see ghosts) just felt sloppy. I love the way the book talked about addiction, and how hard it can be to pull away from that lifestyle. There were just too many elements that were cringe,
one of the biggest being this weird internal desire of Erin wanting nothing more than to have a baby with Silas.
The book also took way too long to get to the point, aka when they take the drugs together. Also - this may just be a me thing but I hate the word loam in all its forms now.

The book is about Erin, Tobias, Amara and Silas. Using drugs from young leads to addiction in adulthood and leader/manipulator Silas uses that to control the group. When Erin makes him leave, Silas kills himself leaving a ‘how to start a mushroom business guide’ to his lapdog Tobias. Erin’s need for Silas unlocks the business and her addiction and she starts tripping. Eventually she realizes she needs to stop and gets to the source to finish Ghost the mushroom and her addiction, letting her past go in the mix.

Loved the writing and flow of the book. Hints of comedy as well in dialogue was refreshing. Twists were crazyyy. Loved the small chapters and the parts.

two things i really love are mushrooms in horror books and ghosts as a metaphor for something else, and i've seen it done before for addiction so this was really unique!! just felt a bit long and i didn't expect it to go that way but still a very enjoyable read
