SEP isn't an award-winning author for nothing. With Heroes Are My Weakness, she's done it again. A spunky heroine and yummy hero, with an interesting supporting cast and just enough suspense to keep the pages turning.
Despite the bad title, this was better than than the last couple of SEPs I've read. The heroine here, while she's got her silly/goofy moments, actually acts like an adult most of the time. (Couldn't say that about her last couple of books.) I did think that someone who seemed to dwell on her past so much might want to actually talk about it with the people involved, but then the big reveal of the book would have been taken care of in the first few pages and there would have been no book. Liked the somewhat darker setting and tone (which isn't saying much, as SEP is usually ADD-chipmunk-level sunny) in this one.
I was so confused through the whole book, nothing made sense to me. It sucked because I never had issues with any SEP books I read before :(

The supposed love interest and talking puppets. Too creepy for me just had to stop reading.
This is awarded 5 stars with some caveats that this book ticked a lot of boxes for me and what I enjoy reading, but also is something I think I’d reread. I get the impression this isn’t a very popular book of hers and I can see why. Some of the plot is a bit weird, some of it’s a bit dark, and some it’s a bit slow, but overall I really enjoyed it.
I liked the relationship between the two main characters. It was complicated and difficult, but I enjoyed watching it develop and, despite everything, I did feel they genuinely cared for each other by the end of the book. Annie was an enjoyable main character; Theo was a bit harder to like, but I think that was the point. I warmed to him a lot more once I worked out.
The puppet part of the story is one that seems to be divisive, but I actually liked it. I squirmed a bit at some of the things they said, I liked them as an addition to the story and as a way to see into Annie’s head a bit more. The central mystery was one I enjoyed, too. I thought the conclusion of it was interesting and wasn’t what I expected.
However, whilst I’ve given it 5 stars, I can concede there’s a lot not to like. Their past together is difficult and unpleasant. Whilst, it’s still a bit much to swallow at points. There's also the fact that some parts of the plot are just a bit weird. A lot happens. Some of it doesn’t seem relevant at the time and doesn’t feel relevant by the end. But still - I loved reading it and it's firmly stuck in my head now as a favourite.
I would recommend it if you like quite unusual romances that are a bit darker.

Slow to build up but does develop into an interesting read.
I read this book because I was looking for a title that started with "H" to help with my Alphabet challenge but I'm glad I chose this book. As a teenager, Annie had an ill-fated with teen romance with Theo which turned almost deadly. Now, many years later, she is back on his island to stay in the cottage her mother left her and to try to find a treasure her mother hinted at on her death bed. The last thing she plans to do is get back on Theo's radar. But circumstances force them back into each others worlds and back into each others arms.
The thing I liked the most about this book was that Annie was a ventriloquist and she had her puppets with her and in her head. It made Annie a unique character. I enjoyed this book.
