“And how long do you think we can keep up this goddamn coming and going?” he asked.

Florentino Ariza had kept his answer ready for fifty-three years, seven months, and eleven days and nights.

“Forever,” he said.

A fine love story that transcends time!

I understood this book only a little as I was reading it and less after I finished. Even if you had never read a single other book of his, the prose alone makes it clear that García Márquez has a stunning amount of talent. I trusted him enough to finish the book and enough to think about it, a grace I doubt I would have granted most other writers.
The puzzle of the book is this: it is about one character's unending love for another, but said love is indistinguishable from obsession. It grants no one greater understanding of their beloved (not for most of the history of the love, anyway). It does not inspire anyone to better deeds or keep them from bad ones. Our lovestruck protagonist is, frankly, evil.
And yet. When they finally have a chance, there is something there. You are carried along by the prose, and the characters are carried along, and we don't really know where they're going but maybe it really is some kind of mosquito-ridden Paradise.

While this book is beautifully written, did everyone collectively decide to blatantly ignore the pedophilia and rape culture it depicted? Like WTF
