A fascinating story about Henry Flagler, with whom I was previously unfamiliar, and how he built Florida’s east coast and specifically the Overseas Railroad.

An incredible insight into an almost forgotten piece of history. A must read for anyone who has taken a trip over the Florida Keys.

A slow read but interesting to learn about Flagler and his attempt to build a railroad to Key West.

If your going to read a book about a building of a bridge, I would recommend [b:The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge|2369|The Great Bridge The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge|David McCullough|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1436016201s/2369.jpg|437205]. It's a much longer book, but far more interesting in my opinion. The parts of the book I liked best in this novel had nothing to do with the bridge, but revolved around his personal life, specifically his three wives.

I lived in Miami when I was young and knew Flagler was someone important because his name is everywhere but never knew exactly who he was. Turns out if it wasn't for Flagler there would be no Miami, he was so instrumental in developing Miami that they wanted to name it after him. This book is about the deadly 1935 hurricane but it's also about Flagler and just how important he was to the development of Florida. There's a lot about Flagler's personal life and also a lot about the Key West Railroad that he funded and built. This book was very well written and interesting to read, the details made it come alive plus there were pictures! I love a non-fiction book with pictures!

Historic account of Henry Flagler's quest to build a railroad down the east coast of FL from St. Augustine to Key West in the late 1800's through early 1900's. This account explores, the impact of making the east coast of FL accessible by rail, the the engineering difficulties of building a railroad in the keys, and the incredible power of destruction of hurricanes.

If you are interested in trains, railroad building, engineering feats, or crazy dreams that become reality through boatloads of money and determination, here is your book.

It is also a great explanation of how Miami came to be the NYC South.

This had me from the first sentence to the last. As a Florida resident, I am fascinated by this state’s history and so I have read my fair share of Flager History. This will be one of my favorites
