I keep going between 3.5/4 stars for this book. It was enjoyable and reminded me of early 2000 romcom movies. It was a little slow the first couple of chapters but once it got going I didn’t want to put it down.

When you’ve re-read a book more than three times, it’s about time to bump up that rating from four to five stars. One of my favorite Crusie works. This was definitely meant to have been made into an absolutely absurd rom-com film.

It is so hard to even find words for this one.

I loved it with the passion of 1000 flaming Cupid-hearts. It was so funny, and sweet, and almost unbearably cute.

I know that I will read this one again and again.

Re-read Sept 2018
There are just no words to express how much I love this book. It will be one of my favorites, in perpetuity.

Re-read July 2022
Definitely still a favorite. You have to hang in there past the asshole beat of the bet, but I feel like the author threaded that line perfectly - Cal was never onboard with it. But man, I just love this book.

Unfortunately, I was not as enamored of this book as its recommenders are. The book read like one of those silver-screen comedies that rely on bodily humor (what's the term for this? isn't there an official term for this?) and whiplash-inducing back-and-forth "dialogue" to give it its supposedly cheeky tone. Yeah, sorry: not my kind of humor. The little boy was cute, though, and I'm glad that Minerva is a plus-sized woman and not someone either bemoaning her small, skinny, curveless stature or a totally fit model-worthy goddess in her 30s. But Cal never charmed me, and when I'm not cheering the characters on and wishing for their happy ending, the story's not going to work for me.

I don’t know what possessed me to read this book, but I wish I hadn’t.

The characters are incredibly flat, the plot is pretty much nonexistent, and the whole weight obsession thing is outdated as hell.

The romance was also boring, there was virtually no tension, and I don’t really see why the MCs fell in love?? Like you wear some cute shoes, enjoy one donut and one kiss and suddenly you’re irresistible?

I can enjoy a fun trashy romance every now and again, but this was neither fun nor particularly trashy.

A really great romance with fun characters, good dialogue and realistic problems to overcome. This was my first Jennifer Crusie book and I enjoyed the very relatable characters she created. Min gets dumped by her boyfriend David (I really don't know what she saw in him) and on the same night she meets Cal. Due to circumstances (she's in a man hating mood, he's made a bet) they go out to dinner against both of their better judgment. After plenty of chicken marsala, donuts (not at the same meal) and lots of laughs they realise how well they get along.

Cute, romantic book a little too "girly" for me.

The friendships, food descriptions, shoe descriptions, and sister relationships really made this book sing for me. It was my first Jennifer Crusie book but probably won't be my last!

I'm not going to lie.  This is probably a book I shouldn't like anymore as much as I do.  I can see the flaws in the plot--why do Cal and Min fall in love in the first place, when they don't seem to spend much time together and she remains convinced for much of it that he's made a bet to get her into bed within a month?  (A bet he made with her ex-boyfriend, mind you.)  Even back when I first read it, Liza continually hitting Cal whenever she caught him kissing Min was NOT COOL.  And the entire "Cal is a jerk because he breaks up with women after a couple of months when they're expecting him to marry them" is...come on, really?  That's a little extreme.  The only woman who should have had any expectation of marriage was, at best, his most recent ex-girlfriend, because of the length of their relationship (nine months), but even that was a bit of a stretch when it was clear that he wasn't in love with her.

I told myself as I listened to the story again that I shouldn't like it as much as I do.  I went and looked up negative reviews on Goodreads and...rolled my eyes so hard at some of them.  And finally told myself that I was allowed to like what I liked, regardless of how silly it was.  I like BET ME.  It isn't my favorite Jennifer Crusie book, but it's pretty darned good.
