Right in the feels

ignore my rating — i’m too shocked to say anything right now. review coming when i catch my breath and check if i have a heart problem

---

because i've read the Illuminae files, i knew that putting my heart into Amie and Jay's hands was a bonehead move. a were-you-born-with-a-brain type of move. but their story telling is exquisite, majestic, and there's nothing else like it. but i prepared myself, you know? i kept up my guard. told myself that i'm just being entertained and to not get too attached.

but even as i did that, my heart and head are still pounding from this book and screaming WHAT THE AKSDFLSJDFL

and i will give this book 4 stars. yes, it is brilliant. i loved many things about it. but it didn't hit that 5 star spot for me -- i use events from the book to justify my ratings, but mostly, i rely on my feelings when it comes to how i rate books, therefore i will give this bad boy 4 stars. it really is great though. i think i was just disappointed that the chemistry between Kal and Aurora just didn't do it for me. it was very........... vanilla. i had high hopes? maybe i just enjoy the chase more than the destination? i'm glad they''re together, but i just stopped being interested in them. i think that's the main reason. the other reason is that i saw the major plot points from miles away. and i'm not upset by that at all -- i love being right!!! -- but it's a more technical reason to give this 4 stars? i do adore the other plot twists though -- had me muffling my screams and omgs at around 3 in the morning.

anyways, the backbone of this series are the characters and i ADORE them all. but in this book, there's one POV i loved the most and that's Goldenboy himself: Tyler Jones, Alpha, Aurora Legion, Squad 312. i thought he was amusing in the first book, but he wasn't my favorite POV (that was Kal's). he stole my attention in this book.

i knew the squad was gonna be split up because that's what all squads have to go through, but i was pleasantly surprised it was Tyler of all people. after all, he's the Alpha -- the leader, the tactical genius, the one who calls the shots. bold move to separate him from his squad, and i admire that.

it also doesn't help that Tyler and Saedii have this thing going on now. (i ship it. i cannot stop.) (the sexual tension? wow. how they're both tactical geniuses and therefore a perfect match for each other? wow. she always makes everything into a fight which will OBVIOUSLY lead to hot, impromptu make out sessions? wow. that KISS she gives him on the cheek when Slydrathi believe that physical touch is an intimacy - NEVER MIND A KISS?? wow.)

also. i refuse to believe that Saedii did not rescue Tyler from that missile. i absolutely refuse. she did. i'm excited to see his story in the final book, alongside Saedii and her Unbroken. furthermore, that revelation about Tyler and Scarlett's SLYDRATHI WAYWALKER mother? my favorite plot twist in the book. (saw it coming that the Starslayer is Kal's father. saw it coming that Auri has to give up her life.)

but my favorite scene in the book has nothing to do with Tyler. check it: the end of Chapter 7. you know what i'm talking about. that moment is the sweetest and most innocent moment so far in the series. i'm in love with it, but also get hurt by the thought of it because i knew happy moments in Amie and Jay's books don't last very long or long or medium or short at all.

andddd i think that's -- OH WAIT. I CAN'T BELIEVE I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THIS:

time travel.

(the time-traveling whore in me is shaking and ready).

I can just imagine Aurora's playlist while she's on watch. Aurora singing (can't sleep), "ALLLLLLLL THE SINGLE LADIES, ALL THE SINGLE LADIES." Magellan would be like, "OH OH OH If you like it then you should put a ring on it, do the dance aurora!" [EMERGENCY DANCE PARTY]

"There is nothing as painful, or as simple, as doing what is right."

Thanks to COVID-19 I had to wait a MONTH to get this beauty! still waiting on my UK edition. PSA: WORTH THE WAIT Y'ALL!!!! This book made me feel so many emotions. Love, Hate, Happy, and Sad. I love Zila learning to be comical/SCARtastic, its like an actually hobby she is committed to by the end like knitting. I love that this book created a new trope for me? lovers to enemies? TO BE DETERMINED... THIS WAS ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED SEQUELS OF 2020 AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!

This masterpiece did not end on a cliffhanger it ended like a buffering movie you need to keep praying stops buffering so you can know what happens to EVERYTHING AND MAKER EVERYONE.
SQUAD 312 is like guardians of the galaxy but younger, wittier, and dangerous.
