I have long loved Maggie Stiefvater’s work. This book and the sweetwater within it did not disappoint.
The setting was interesting, but everything else was fine.
Very slow, and the prose doesn’t work for me. I had a hard time following what was in the present or past when in the characters’ heads.

I've never read any of Stiefvater's other work, mostly because I'm not much of a YA person, but the description for her adult debut intrigued me. After having read this, I can honestly say that I'm glad I took a chance on this one, because it was a very nice reward. June's position of leadership is refreshing for historical fiction of this time period (and very prescient of the rise of women in the workforce during and after WWII and their ascensions to high positions as time has gone on), and Tucker's development is quite fun to see. Plus, I love magical realism, so seeing that tag here and elsewhere got me excited, though I was expecting to see more of it in action than we ultimately did; but still, a great addition to the elements of this book. I'm definitely talking this one up for a while.
Also, that dialogue from Tucker on p. 348 of this edition that begins with "Everything."... my god did that pull at my heartstrings. I might just have to buy a copy (borrowed it from the library for this read) to have it handy. Well done, Miss Stiefvater.

I enjoyed this story for the light it shed on a piece of history I’d never heard of before! How complex of an issue to be placed in the position to meet people’s needs who have morally horrifying beliefs of their own. It lost me a bit with the water… it felt like a metaphor too large to fully wrap my head around. But I appreciate why the author made it such an integral piece of the story.
